History of World Environmental Day
The United Nations General Assembly established World Environment Day (WED) in 1972. It was established in honor of the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment. The first WED was held in 1974, with an emphasis on the theme “Only One Earth.” Since then, countries have hosted this annual event every year. In 1987, the idea for rotating the host country was introduced.
Since its inception in 1974, the World Environment Day has been organized by 34 different cities in 25 different countries around the world. These celebrations have taken place in Cuba and Korea, from Belgium to Brazil. Some countries have hosted World Environment Day more than once. Countries including Bangladesh and China have hosted more than twice. People from all over the world participate in an array of events each year to raise awareness about a specific environmental issue.
World Environment Day 2022 Theme
In 2022, World Environment Day will be hosted by Sweden, with the campaign slogan “Only One Earth.” The focus of the event will be on “Living Sustainably in Harmony with Nature.”
World Environment Day is a day to appreciate nature, protect it, and spread awareness of global issues like pollution. The stunning facts? An estimated 7 million people die each year from causes related to air pollution. Majority of air pollution occurring in the Asia-Pacific region.
